In carotid stenosis, atherosclerotic plaque narrows the artery diameter, reducing blood flow (fig. A ).

The irregular surface of the artery wall can cause clot formation that blocks the vessel or breaks off, travels downstream, and blocks a smaller vessel (fig. B).
